SPRINGFIELD – Spelled out in a fourth-graders handwriting, the sign outside A Touch of Garlic restaurant said: “Be thankful for everything.”
That message pretty much summed up the sentiments of the 120-plus people who enjoyed a traditional roast turkey dinner at the White Street restaurant Thursday, the 14th Thanksgiving that owners Joe and Kara Rescia presented their charity event.
In offering the 1 p.m. meal, the restaurant owners promised a free, home-style turkey dinner with fixings. But, in the opinion of one diner, the Rescias were being far too modest.
This isn’t like dining at home – it’s dining at a restaurant,” said Louise Deslavrier, 78, of East Longmeadow.
Besides being more convenient than a 200-mile round trip to her daughter Denise’s home in Gloucester, the dinner offered an upbeat, festive mood, too, Deslavrier said.
“We got her early so we could get the (front) corner table and see everything,” said Deslavrier, who shared the table with her husband, Merle.
Guests at the dinner included clients of several Springfield social service agencies, including The Children’s Study Home, Prospect House, New Horizon’s MLK Transition Center, Gray House, Rutledge House, the YWCA and Friends of the Homeless, Inc.
