Here is a snapshot of who and how FOH fulfilled its mission last year:
In 2011, Friends of the Homeless:
- Provided shelter for 1159 individuals (888 men and 271 women)
- Averaged 146 individuals in shelter each night (average length of stay – 46 nights)
- Provided 53,386 Bed Nights (Bed Night = 1 person/1 night)
- Provided permanent Single Room Occupancy apartments for 115 individuals at our two housing sites on campus (83 units at 769 and 32 units at 755 Worthington Street)
- Served approximately 150,531 meals (average 12,544 meals/mo)
- Tallied 6294 medical office encounters at Friends of the Homeless
Individuals in Shelter in 2011:
- 50% (578) were from Springfield, 69% (800) were from Hampden County, and 82% (946) were from Massachusetts
- 50% had completed high school or obtained a GED (7.5% also had some college education or a degree)
- 73% were single, 13.5% married, 11% divorced, 2.5% widowed
- Almost 7% were veterans
