Poverty rate increases in Western Mass., Brookings Institution reports

SPRINGFIELD – Poverty increased faster in the outlying areas of most American metropolitan areas than the city centers, according to a new study released this week by The Brookings Institution.

But Springfield bucked that trend with relatively modest increases in suburban poverty compared with increasing poverty in the city itself, the study revealed.
