As the number of homeless families living in motels spiked this summer in Western Massachusetts and statewide, Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray on Thursday unveiled a plan to provide another $1.56 million to help deal with the problem across the state.
According to Pamela Schwartz, director of the Western Massachusetts Network to End Homelessness, the number of homeless families in motels in Western Massachusetts has jumped to 234, up 43 percent from 164 at the end of June.
She attributed the increase to a shortfall of state and federal money needed to help families find more permanent housing.
