SPRINGFIELD - A Friends of the Homeless employee said volunteers will be out this weekend looking for people who may need shelter from the frigid temperatures.

"We want to get out there and let them know that they do have options," said Nehemiah Harper, a member of the intake staff at Friends of the Homeless shelter on Worthington Street.

"The door's always open. We have enough room for everybody," he said.

As of 6 p.m. Saturday, Harper said there were approximately 70 adults at the shelter. He said there can be as many as 150 people at the shelter on cold nights.

The city's health and human services director, Helen R. Caulton-Harris, has said her staff, the police and homeless shelter officials will be out downtown to encourage the homeless to seek shelter and get off the streets.
