SPRINGFIELD - The historic Old First Church, which closed nearly two years ago and was purchased by the city, has left nearly $1.7 million in assets for community causes including $592,690 for future maintenance needs of the Court Square building.
The intention to release the remaining assets was announced Tuesday by the Advisory Council of Old First Church. In keeping with its 370-year tradition of stewardship and social responsibility, the congregation had voted in February 2008 to provide $1,693,000 in final assets to recipients based on such factors as service to the community and mission, the advisory council stated.
Under the gifting plan, three permanent funds will be administered by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, including the funds set aside specifically for maintenance of Old First Church and its organ. The funds are intended to help preserve the historical integrity and legacy of the building,
The congregation has also set aside funds with the Community Foundation of $254,010 each for the Greater Springfield Senior Services Inc. and the Friends of the Homeless Inc.
