1000 Hats for the Homeless

Longmeadow – Fourteen year old Corinne Fisher has spun a yarn that will warm the hearts of many this winter season. It started with the first hat she ever crocheted. Corinne’s first hat is now joined by 999 others, en route to needy heads this winter.

The home- schooled teenager originally set out to make 100 handmade hats for the homeless. Her efforts found support among her family, friends and neighbors. A good idea got even better, when Corinne wondered, “Why stop at 100?” She added another zero to her goal and aimed for a thousand handmade hats.

Once they heard about Corinne’s efforts, knitting circles in several area communities including Longmeadow and East Longmeadow picked up their needles to join in. Corinne will reach her new goal of one thousand hats any day.

What a great way to top off this, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. The week before Thanksgiving the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
