2010 Data appears to be exceeding 2009 in some key areas especially in terms of numbers of new individuals served. In the meantime, here are some prior year summaries:

 

In 2009, Friends of the Homeless: 

  • Provided shelter for 1277 individuals (1001 men and 276 women)
  • Averaged 140 individuals in shelter each night (average length of stay – 40 nights)
  • Provided 50,949 Bed Nights (Bed Night = 1 person/1 night)
  • Provided permanent Single Room Occupancy apartments for 82 individuals (54 men and 28 women)
  • Served approximately 127,374 meals
  • Tallied over 5,538 medical office encounters at Friends of the Homeless.

Individuals in Shelter:

  • 923 listed Hampden County as their last permanent address
  • 59% had 12 years of education or a GED (12% also had some college education or a degree)
  • 71% were single
  • 8% were veterans

Top 5 causes given by clients for homelessness:

  • Financial 25%
  • Domestic Dispute 15%
  • Evicted 15%
  • Alcohol/Substance abuse 13%
  • Housing 11%
